Curriculum | Building Student Success – B.C. Curriculum (gov.bc.ca)
The BC Curriculum contains both suggested guidelines and content that needs to be taught to the students in the classroom.
When I began my teaching journey last fall, I had not realized how much the field of primary education had changed since my days as a student in primary school. The notion that teachers didn’t teach to the textbook anymore, and instead had the freedom to teach what they wanted as long as it fit into the fairly broad categories in the BC curriculum website seemed wild to me. But now I see that mindset as one that is rooted in a fear of failure. The less experienced an individual is, the more they take comfort in relying on external sources, such as the textbook. My perspective has shifted to recognizing the potential for creativity that can come from a less structured curriculum. Although it is still daunting, it is also exciting to think that the teacher now has more influence to teach to their strengths and to their student’s needs.
