Place Based Education

I was really excited to find this place in Vernon when researching for a place-based educational project in social studies. While I was in school in Vernon, there was very little opportunity to learn about the Syilx people and their history. When I was looking for a place where I could take my future classes, a lot of the options I remember from my time as a student seemed a bit tokenistic. There were a few that seemed like they simply added some indigenously inspired activities, but they didn’t look like they had input from Syilx people. This garden was made by members of the Syilx people with the blessing of the Syilx elders, and they encourage community members and classes to come for free to learn about their history and the local plants. It looks like a very informative, authentic experience and I am excited to check it out come summer.
